QA without a QA team

Most startups have no QA engineer, and most shipped bugs are the boring kind a fresh pair of eyes would catch. Here is a routine for a team of one to five that fits in a normal week.

How do small teams do QA without a QA engineer?

Automate the checks that never change (a few unit and end-to-end tests for money and permissions), let AI agents use every preview deploy like new users, and do a short manual pass before big launches. Mimiq covers the middle part: agents in real browsers report what broke, which requests failed or were slow, and where they got stuck, for a few dollars a run.

What actually goes wrong

Not exotic bugs. A form that breaks on a phone, an email link to the wrong domain, a button that throws, a slow endpoint after signup. They ship because the person who built the change tested it once, on the path they built, and nobody else looked.

  • A few scripted tests for money and permissions.
  • Agents on every preview deploy for new-user paths.
  • A 20 minute manual pass before big launches.
  • Fix what most agents hit first.
  • About $1.90 for a run of 5 agents.

How it works

  1. 01

    Pick your three critical tasks

Sign up, the core job, paying. Everything else is second.

  2. 02

Script only what must never change

Totals, permissions, data that must not leak. Keep it to a handful of tests you will actually maintain.

  3. 03

    Put agents on every preview

The GitHub Action runs them when the preview is live and comments on the pull request.

  4. 04

    Triage weekly

Fix what most agents hit; ignore one-off oddities unless the browser recorded an error.

Where agents fit

They are the fresh eyes. They will not tell you the tax calculation is off by a cent, and they will tell you the coupon field rejects lowercase codes and the "Continue" button is under the cookie banner on a phone.

Agents are simulated users. They find problems fast and on every build; they do not forecast how many real people will convert, they are not a deterministic regression suite, and they do not install native mobile apps.

40steps at most for each agent, each in its own real browser. Every step comes with a screenshot and what the agent was thinking at the time.
20agents at once, each acting as a different one of your users. The browser also records every error, failed request and request slower than 3 seconds on your site, on the step it happened. Agents find problems; they do not forecast how many people will convert.

Questions

What does it cost a month?

The Builder plan is $19 a month for 500 credits: about 33 runs of 3 agents, or 20 runs of 5. 5 credits an agent.

Do I need CI?

No. You can paste a link in the app whenever you ship, or ask your coding agent to run it.
